The Otter is a narrow, light, and fast canoe that tracks beautifully. She has about 1" of tumblehome amidships, straight sides at the seats and is slightly flared at the ends with sharp entry lines. The bottom is fairly flat with very little rocker on the ends. She can be used as a small tandem canoe or a solo expedition canoe. Maximum carrying capacity is between 350 and 400 pounds. Standard construction includes #12 canvas, no keel or half ribs and two seats. The Otter can be customized for solo or tandem use. View Photos of the Otter in the gallery. |
Lutre (Otter in French) is built on the Otter form, but then is allowed to relax wider before the planking is tacked to the stems. This creates straight sides amidships, and flared sides towards the end, adds about 1 ½" of rocker, raises the bow, and flattens the bottom. The Lutre is easier to turn than the Otter and somewhat more stable. The Lutre is probably more comfortable as a tandem canoe and the Otter a better choice if your primary use will be solo paddling. Standard construction includes #12 canvas, no keel or half ribs and two seats. The Lutre can be customized for solo or tandem use. |
